Midweek Evening Show – ‘One Hit Wonder’ – 15th – 17th September 2020

Our One Hit Wonder features a song from 1995 which, unlike many of the songs featured here, managed to achieve unrepeated success, not just in the UK but around the world! How Bizarre was a huge hit for the New Zealand band OMC in at least 16 countries including the USA, UK and Canada. Whilst the band enjoyed continued success in their native land, they never managed to repeat it elsewhere. For example, in the UK this song reached number 5 and stuck around for 16 weeks. Yet they only manged to reach number 56 in the UK charts with just one of their subsequent releases. The story was much the same elsewhere.

But, it is one of the songs that lots of people are aware of, with it’s catch pithy title and hook being slipped into many adverts, comedies and dramas. They include the movies The Parent Trap. Palmetto and the American sitcom, Clueless.

The song reached no 18 in the UK chart in 1987 sticking around for 8 weeks and also enjoyed significant airplay in the U.S. dance charts. As usual, we have included links, below, so you can listen again via YouTube and download via iTunes and Amazon.
