Steve’s ‘One Hit Wonder’ 2nd – 4th June 2020

Our celebration of unrepeated UK chart success continued on this weeks’ Midweek Evening Show, a earlier this evening with a band whose success was so limited we’ve struggled to find out anything about them! Nevertheless, they did make an impact on the UK charts back in 1995, rising to no 65 and sticking around for two weeks.

The band was called Bel Canto and this song We’ve Got To Work It Out was featured heavily by then BBC Radio 1 Drivetime DJ Mark Goodier. I think it’s fair to say that this is a bit of a Marmite song with people loving or hating it in equal proportions. Nevertheless, despite enjoying quite a following in the club scene of the time, the band never returned with a follow up single that we know of.

This may because there is another band at the time called Bel Canto from Norway that seems to have enjoyed considerably more success, albeit not in the UK. So it appears that with this debut single not making much of a splash, the artists behind it decided to leave their namesake free use of the band name, and never returned.

But, it’s one of Steve’s favourite 90’s dance tunes and so makes it’s return to the UK airwaves as this week’s One Hit Wonder. If you’d like to hear it again, there are links to the video on YouTube. Unfortunately, the song is so obscure it’s not available for download but you can purchase the CD SIngle from Amazon below. And, don’t forget to let us know what you think too!
