This week’s One Hit Wonder was Baauer’s Harlem Shake and, as we’ve found on some of our previous examples, it’s often something completely unexpected that propels a band into mainstream success, albeit for just a short period. For Harlem Shake it was an online video dance craze that propelled the song to the top of the charts around the world. A brief search of You Tube will give you plenty of examples but lots of well known names got involved including The Simpsons and Manchester City FC!
The song spent nearly four months in the UK chart reaching as high as 3 at it’s peak in 2013. Like many OHW artists, Baauer tried to build on this achievement with subsequent releases. However, their best effort after that was their tie-up with Jay-Z, and that only made it to number 82 in the UK.
If you’d like to hear it again, there are links to the video on YouTube and also to purchase it on iTunes and Amazon.
